*United Airlines Accident Memorial
On June 30, 1956, at 11:30 a.m., TWA Flight 2 (Constellation) with 70 persons aboard, collided with United Airlines Flight 718 (DC-7), with 58 persons aboard, over the Grand Canyon. Points of impact were on Temple and Chuar Buttes near the confluence of the Little Colorado and Colorado Rivers. Both flights were at approximately 20,000 feet and originated from Los Angeles. There were no survivors; 128 died. At the time, this was the worst disaster in commercial aviation history. The bodies of 29 of the 58 United Airline accident victims were identified and returned to their homes for burial. The unidentified are represented by four coffins buried below this memorial. Names of 2 relatives of the 29 unidentified dead were added to the memorial, bringing the total of names engraved on the monument to 31. Another monument was erected for the TWA crash victims at Citizens Cemetery in Flagstaff, Arizona. The planes were both traveling east at approximately 300 miles per hour on a gradually converging course at the same elevation. Investigators determined that the left wing tip of the United Airlines flight apparently struck the rear part of the TWA flight. The TWA plane apparently changed course to go above and south of the cloud formation. The last message from either plane was from the United DC-7 at 11:30 a.m., "Salt Lake, United 718--ah--we're going in." *Source: GC Museum Cemetery File.
